What's Mandarin for Weetabix ?

Recently in Geneva, while attending a conference, I was fortunate enough to be able to go up the Aiguille du Midi. Here's a pic of me at the top, for no particular reason...
On the way up, the carriage was full of visitors from India, whose coach was parked at the bottom. This was a small example of the increasing global growth of tourists from countries who would previously have tended to stay at home rather than travel long distances for holidays.

The Chinese also are beginning to travel away from their home country in increasing numbers, and represent a great opportunity for companies who can offer some sort of niche support for tourists.

In Chamonix, the Chinese community have the help of Mr Yang (we passed his restaurant as it happens) who has been helping them during their visit for a long time.

Something else that is happening is the change in the Chinese diet, which connects with work on globalisation and also a book that's been mentioned quite a lot on this blog lately....

A Chinese company has apparently bought up a stake in Weetabix (hence the blog post title) and this is connected with the changing diet of many people whose lifestyles are changing as they begin to share more in the wealth that development brings, although not everyone is convinced that this is the main driver of change.

This article in CHINA DAILY has some useful background information on some of the changes, and there is plenty on the signs of these changes in China.

Shift happens...
