Salzburg digitalearth course - 2 of 5

Day 1
After a hotel breakfast, we walked to the University's campus. This was the site of the environmental departments, rather than being in the most historic buildings which are within the Old Town of the city itself, including up the splendour of the Monschberg.

We had a few technical problems in the room where we started the day, so Karl Donert led a session on spatial literacy where he introduced some of the main elements of literacy which feed into the work of geographers. There was particular mention of the different ways that geographers teach about, and in, space.

We then moved into the computer suite where we spent a few days working on a range of tools, to develop a toolkit for spatial thinking. I kicked things off with Mapcrunch to make a point about the way that we see the world, and how tools like Google Street View are 'partial' and need to be used critically.

We explored a range of tools and approaches to pedagogy. If anyone is particularly interested in the sessions that I ran through the day get in touch and I can send you a link to the basic delegate notes.

We had a really good day. The weather was sunny, but as we walked back to the hotel it came on to rain. This was a pity as we had planned to go into the town for the last night of Ruprtikirtag festival - we did that anyway. The fireworks were excellent, and the pouring rain stopped just in time for them...

The good news is that the course is running again in February and you have a chance to join me.
Check this website and apply early if you want a chance to come along.
