This free CPD course aims to develop the knowledge of sustainable development in the teaching of geography at KS3 and GCSE. Presented by experienced and inspirational course leaders, delegates will have the opportunity to discuss and evaluate a range of practical approaches to help develop your geography students. Teachers attending the course will be provided with a CD containing materials from the course and a free buffet lunch.

Course Leader / Presenter Profiles
Ari Trausti Guðmundsson is one of Iceland’s best known geologists and a former Icelandic Presidential candidate. With over 25 years’ experience as a freelance consultant, Ari has worked in a variety of fields, including TV hosting, teaching and writing.

Simon Ross is a Head of Geography and has written several mainstream geography textbooks, such as the AQA GCSE A text for Nelson Thornes, the Exploring Geography KS3 series for Hodder Education and the AQA A level series for OUP.

Jo Debens is a Head of Geography. She won a Microsoft Innovative Teacher award in 2010 and enjoys bringing technology and creativity into the classroom. Jo has been instrumental in introducing the mobile@priory BYOD policy, as well as providing training in school and at conferences or TeachMeets.

Hjörvar Sæberg Högnason is the UK General Manager for Iceland’s leading airline, Icelandair.

The Programme
9.30-10.00am: Costa Rican coffee, tea and cakes.

10.00-11.00am: 'Sustainable development in Iceland: international, national and local community perspectives' by Ari Trausti Guðmundsson

11.00-11.15am: Questions and answers

11.15-11.45am: Coffee break

11.45-1.00pm: Simon Ross - teaching about sustainability at GCSE. A consideration of the concept of sustainability through the study of selected case studies in tourism (ecotourism), settlement and population.

1.00-13.45pm: Lunch provided (including a selection of treats from the various Discover the World destinations).

1.45-2.45pm: Jo Debens - teaching about sustainability at KS3

2.45-3.00pm: Coffee break

3.00-3.30pm: Presentation from Hjörvar Sæberg Högnason on how Icelandair managed the impact of flight disruption during the 2010 Eyjafjallajökull eruption.

3.30-3.45pm: Questions and answers

3.45-4.15pm: Coffee
