Trainee teachers' use of GIS - some research

One of the areas that I've worked on most over the last few years has been the development of GIS and its integration into teaching. I've worked with ESRI UK on courses and consultancy, and also written materials for Digimap for Schools, Digimap for Colleges and OS Mapstream, as well as my work with Google Earth too.

Nicola Walsh has shared her research on how trainee teachers engage with GIS, and there are some useful points made here about barriers to adoption and the nature of teachers' work with this technology. As ArcGIS Online is made free to all local schools, there will hopefully be more need for work of this kind, to coincide with the good work that Steve Richardson and others are developing for ESRI UK's teacher portal.

Nicola's article is currently available as Open Access here.
